The Roman Empire captures the attention of archaeologists and lovers of ancient history and culture, even after many centuries. In addition to the numerous cities they designed and built, the Romans cultivated grapes and made wine, especially in eastern Serbia, where the cult of producing top quality wines has been maintained to this day. Through history and culture, we take you on a tour, primarily intended for hedonists.
Tour plan - Itinerary:
Departure from Niš in front of the „RODA“ hypermarket (Vizantijski bulevar 1) at 07:00 a.m. We arrive in Knjaževac via the main road through Svrljig and the Tresibaba pass. A tour of the Homeland Museum of Knjaževac, where a special treasure is the ethnological collection of two-string knitted socks, unique in the world. In the village of Potrkanje, we visit the Jović winery with a wine tasting and a wine board with products from the Stara planina Mountain. The family Jović is also known for growing an autochthonous type of cherry, from which they produce the wine “Višnjica“.
Our trip continues to the Archaeo-Ethno park in Ravna, which includes several buildings, such as a lapidarium from the Roman era, old country houses from the beginning of the 20th century, a wine museum and, in the immediate vicinity, the archaeological site of Timacum Minus.
The road further leads us to the site of Felix Romuliana, a palace that represents an artistic achievement of the late antiquity of the 3rd and 4th centuries and which is on the list of UNESCO’s world cultural heritage.
After the tour, we continue to Rajačke Pimnice, a wine village built of sandstone in the middle of the 19th century, and to the old Serbian cemetery, which is a protected cultural monument. Lunch in an authentic wine cellar from 1878 with a tasting of the famous wines of Negotinska Krajina and traditional dishes of Eastern Serbia. Return to Niš in the evening. End of program.
