The Svrljig Mountains are one of those mountain regions in Serbia that still preserve a true sense of wilderness and tranquility. Gently rolling ridges, wide mountain pastures, and forested belts alternate with rocky outcrops that open up sweeping views toward Suva Planina and Stara Planina mountians, and the Nišava River valley. Far from mass tourism, the Svrljig Mountains offer a feeling of freedom, space, and an authentic mountain atmosphere. Pleš, one of the highest and most scenic peaks of this range, stands out as a natural viewpoint from which the dramatic Sićevo Gorge can be admired in its full grandeur, while the gaze extends toward the imposing Suva Planina and the scattered villages nestled among the surrounding hills.

Tour plan:

Departure from the “Čair” Sports Hall in Niš (in front of the ticket office) at 7:00 a.m. After a short drive, we arrive in the village of Gradište, located on the slopes above the impressive Sićevo Gorge, one of the most striking natural landmarks of southeastern Serbia. The hike begins in Gradište and leads toward Pleš peak (1,267 m). The trail is varied and moderately inclined, combining forest sections, open meadows, and airy ridge segments. The ascent is gradual and enjoyable, with frequent breaks to rest and take in the increasingly expansive views as we approach the summit. From the top, spectacular panoramas unfold over the Sićevo Gorge, the Nišava River valley, and the surrounding mountain ranges, making this peak one of the finest viewpoints in the Svrljig Mountains. The return follows a circular route along a different trail back to Gradište, adding variety and a dynamic character to the hike. After completing the walk, we return to Niš in the afternoon.
