The Republic of Greece, the largest country on the Balkans, is nestled at the southeastern tip of Europe, on the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula, at the crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The Aegean Sea to the east, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south wash its rugged shores and numerous islands. It is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, with an extraordinarily rich history, as it was a favorable location for the development of many cultures that have marked the stages of its development and existence.

Zagorohoria is a fascinating mountain region in Epirus. Located in the western part of Greece, Zagori is a complex of 46 picturesque villages nestled in the heart of nature. These beautiful villages stand out for their distinctive traditional architecture, wild natural landscapes, and rustic surroundings.

Due to its exceptional location, Zagori is a favorite destination for vacations during the autumn and winter. Over the years, it has become known for extreme sports and activities such as rafting on the Voidomatis River, horseback riding, and hiking. Among the most impressive places in Zagori is the Vikos Gorge, the second deepest in the world, right after the Grand Canyon. This region offers ideal opportunities for hiking and exploring untouched nature.

Tour plan:

Departure from Belgrade in the early morning hours from the prearranged location. Journey through Serbia, North Macedonia, and Greece with stopovers for rest and border formalities. Arrival in Ioannina, the capital of Epirus, in the afternoon. A short city tour with a lunch break. Continuation of the journey to Zagori, an area located at the foothills of Mount Timfi, part of the impressive Pindos mountain range, which the Greeks call the “spine of Greece,” as the mountain divides the country into the Ionian (Epirus) and Aegean (Thessaly) basins. Accommodation in a village with our hosts. Dinner. Overnight stay.

After breakfast, a tour of Zagori, which includes 46 traditional mountain villages, each with its stone houses, narrow cobbled streets, and old stone bridges. In the heart of this magical land lies Vikos, the deepest canyon in Europe, with its dramatic cliffs towering over the surroundings. The Vikos and Aoos Canyons are part of the Natura 2000 program, under the patronage of UNESCO. Visit the most beautiful spots in the national park: the Oxia viewpoint, the Stone Forest, and the Monastery of St. Paraskevi in Monodendri. Lunch break. The transfer then takes us to the village of Kapesovo, where we begin one of the most beautiful hikes in Zagori—walking along stone steps through the canyon to the village of Vradeto and further to the Beloi viewpoint. Walking through these traditional villages, surrounded by architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries, you will have the opportunity to experience a journey through time. The stone houses testify to past eras, while Byzantine influences are reflected in the beautiful churches that adorn the horizon. Transfer to accommodation. Dinner. Overnight stay.

Breakfast. Transfer to the “Active Rafting Nature” center in Kleidonia. A short briefing with the assistance of the skipper; each boat accommodates 8 people, and breaks are made at the most attractive sections of the lower course of the Voidomatis River. Spring is the ideal time for this adventure due to the optimal water levels. Our rafting trip lasts 2 hours, covering a total of 6 km, encountering various challenges and two small waterfalls at the end of the descent. The Voidomatis River is proud to hold the title of one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. Lunch break at one of the many taverns in Zagori. The rest of the day will be spent on a circular trail, 10 km long, which takes us from the village of Vitze to the village of Dilofo, where we visit some of the most beautiful architectural works of Zagori. Dinner. Overnight stay.

Breakfast. Transfer to Konitsa, a town that forms the northwestern border of the Vikos-Aoos National Park. Visit to the stone bridge, which, with its length of 40 meters and height of 20 meters, is the largest single-arch bridge on the entire Balkan Peninsula. The view from the bridge over the Aoos River canyon is breathtaking. Through the phenomenal landscapes of Epirus and western Macedonia, with a lunch break in the afternoon, we arrive at the Loutraki spa. Enjoy a well-deserved rest in one of the thermal springs, with temperatures reaching up to 37 degrees. Accommodation in one of the villages at the foot of Mount Nidže. Dinner. Overnight stay.

After breakfast, transfer to the plateau of the Vora Mountain Center at 2047 meters above sea level, where we begin the ascent to Kajmaktsalan, 2521 meters above sea level, the highest peak of Mount Nidže. At the summit, one of the hardest battles of the Serbian army during World War I was fought, and it remains a symbol of courage and survival. The trail, with a total length of 8 km and an elevation difference of 470 meters, is considered an easy hiking route. After hiking, drive to Bitola with a lunch break. Continue the journey towards Serbia with a rest stop and border formalities. Arrival in Niš (Belgrade) in the late evening hours. End of the program.
