Welcome to Stara Planina – the heart of untamed nature!

Stara Planina, part of the majestic Balkan mountain range, stretches across eastern Serbia and into central Bulgaria, all the way to the Black Sea. Spanning over 600 km, this mountain is a true natural treasure – a blend of wilderness, tradition, and tranquility.

It’s not just a mountain – it’s an experience.

With its highest peak, Midžor, towering above 2,000 meters, the mountain is crisscrossed by crystal-clear streams, waterfalls like Tupavica, and mystical rivers such as the Temštica, famous for its stunning meanders. The dramatic cliffs of Babin Zub, the enchanting valley of the Bigar stream, and endless green pastures invite you to explore.

Why did we choose Stara Planina for our kids’ camp?

Because this area is:

  • A protected national park – home to rare plant and animal species, including eagles, foxes, and deer.
  • A perfect natural playground – where kids can climb, kayak, hike, explore caves, and learn outdoor skills.
  • A land of fairytale-like villages – such as Dojkinci, where the spirit of the past lives on, where homemade food fills the air with delicious smells, and where mobile phone signals fade into silence.

In these landscapes that feel like a long-lost paradise, children do not just learn about nature – they become part of it.

Tour plan:

Dojkinci – Tupavica Waterfall – Dojkinci

Camp participants gather between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. in front of the mountain lodge in Dojkinci, at the gateway to Stara Planina. After settling into the lodge, getting to know the guides and the group, and having lunch, we begin our hike along the Dojkinci River valley. On this easy 8 km walk, we will visit Tupavica – one of the most beautiful waterfalls in this part of Stara Planina. Along the way, we will learn how to follow trail markings and what is important when moving in a group. The day ends with dinner around the campfire, participant introductions, a short workshop on why water is our most valuable resource, and basic mountain survival rules. Overnight stay

Dojkinci – Slavinjsko Grlo Canyon – Cheese farm – Jelovica Spring – Dojkinci

After morning stretching and breakfast, we head out to the village of Slavinja, near which lies Slavinjsko Grlo – a unique natural canyon where waterfalls tumble from one rocky pool to another. Along the way, we will explore the local flora and fauna and visit a cave hidden within the canyon. On our return, we will visit a local cheese farm where children can see how traditional cheese is made. Lunch will be at the “Vrelo” restaurant, followed by a visit to the Jelovica Spring – a fascinating natural phenomenon. In the afternoon, a workshop titled “My Hiking Backpack” awaits. We end the day with dinner and a talk about traditional shepherd life in this region. Overnight stay.

Dojkinci – Zavoj Lake – Gostuša – Dojkinci

Morning stretching and breakfast. We take organized transport to Zavoj Lake for a kayaking adventure. Children will learn how to use the equipment, paddle safely, and stay secure on the water. We arrive at the bay near the village of Gostuša and begin a short hike through this unique stone village – a cultural and historical landmark. There, we will taste traditional homemade food and enjoy a lunch break hosted by local families. We return to the camp full of impressions. Dinner by the campfire. Outdoor movie night. Overnight stay.

Dojkinci – Ponor – Dojkinci

After morning activities and breakfast, we set off from the mountain lodge and follow a scenic trail through the Duboki Do valley to Ponor – one of the most magical places in Stara Planina National Park. It is a karst depression with no surface water runoff. On our hike, we will learn how to safely move through mountainous terrain and how to navigate in nature. We will have a group lunch at Ponor, and upon returning to the lodge, there will be a short lecture on the flora and fauna of Stara Planina followed by a workshop titled “Plants Around Us – Make Your Own Herbarium.” Dinner and evening social time. Overnight stay.

Dojkinci – Pakleški peak – Dojkinci

After stretching and breakfast, it is time for a real hiking adventure. This is an opportunity for children to experience a true mountaineering challenge, build team spirit, and develop perseverance. They also get another chance to admire the magnificence of Stara Planina. The trail leads us to Pakleški Peak (1300 m), which offers breathtaking views of the Arbinje Special Nature Reserve, the Dojkinačka River, Mount Mramor, Stražna Čuka, Bratkova Strana, Ravno Bučje, Bodin Peak, and the karst depression Ponor, which we visited the day before. After a short break and, of course, a group photo, we head back to the camp. Lunch break. In the afternoon, we learn how to set up a camp and safely light a fire in controlled conditions. Dinner by the campfire and the awarding of symbolic badges for each team’s effort. Overnight stay.

Morning exercise. Breakfast. The day begins with rock climbing on a natural wall under the supervision of experienced instructors. Return to camp. Lunch. The afternoon is reserved for an adventure obstacle course in nature and a creative workshop – drawing, writing, and crafting memories from the camp. The day ends with a quiz, dinner, and a karaoke party. Overnight stay.

Dojkinci – return home

After breakfast, we pack our gear, tidy up the camp, and reflect on the experience. Diplomas are awarded to all our young explorers, followed by warm goodbyes until the next adventure. Departure is planned around 10 a.m., filled with smiles, hugs, and stories that will be retold for a long time.
